Misery Harbour er historien om forfatteren Espen Arnakke, en mann som jages av sin dramatiske fortid. Fra han var svært ung var han besatt av tanken på å unnslippe det fattige livet, i dobbelt forstand, i byen Jante i Danmark. Han forteller senere i livet hele sin historie til Jenny, kvinnen han elsker, som han treffer i Oslo
Jenny lytter til Espens historie, men tror ikke på avslutningen. Hun tror ikke Espen er i stand til å drepe.

Young Espen Arnakke wants to be someone, but the little town of Jante keeps him down. He flees to sea, looking for adventure and freedom, but finds life on the boat
even worse than in his home town. He jumps ship in Newfoundland where he meets the girl of his dreams and finds a friend. But love quickly turns to jealousy and friendship to hate. Espen Arnakke claims to have killed a man when he was 17. But was it murder or something worse?
